What is reflective aluminum flat street signs? These will reflect at night when light hits it. Signs are .080 inch thick flat aluminum with 3M advanced engineer grade prismatic sheeting applied over the surface, the lettering and background is reflective. Beware of any brands thinner then .080", (.040 or .063) can be easily bent by vandals. High quality materials result in longer lasting signs and excellent resistance to fading. What is reflective aluminum extruded street name signs? These will reflect at night when light hits it. Signs are .080 inch thick aluminum with 3M high intensity prismatic reflective sheeting applied over the surface, the lettering and background is reflective. The extruded street signs are not flat, they have a thicker 1/4" flange on the top and bottom of the sign. This thicker flange makes the extruded sign more rigid compared to the flat signs. Remember to use hardware designed for extruded street name signs. High intensity prismatic signs will never rust and have an average life span of 12 years. These signs are 3 times more reflective then engineer grade and have longer life spans. These street name signs are .080 inch thick flat aluminum with 3M high intensity prismatic reflective sheeting applied over the surface, the lettering and background is highly reflective. Signs will never rust and have an average life span of 12 years. High quality materials result in longer lasting signs and superior resistance to fading. They meet the new State and Federal requirements for street sign reflectivity, type IV prismatic reflective.
Additional Information Typically installed on round, square, or U-channel posts which may be purchased in our posts section. U-channel posts are easier to place in the ground. Street signs require special brackets found in our bracket section. You should always refer to your local DOT guidelines and city requirements when installing traffic control devices. Novelty signs or street sign blades less then 6" tall are not allowed on public or private roadways. Please refer to the MUTCD which gives examples of how high the street signs should be. Typically around 7-8 feet above ground, these heights insure better visibility and make it harder to vandalize the signs.
The MUTCD now recommend that street signs be high intensity reflective and lettered using upper-case and lower-case letters. On a 2-lane street, 8" or 9" blades with 6" letters are recommended for all speed limits. The 6" blades may be used when the speed limit is 25 MPH or less. On multi-lane streets, 9" blades are used when speed limit is 40 MPH or less. Multi-lane streets with speed limits more then 40 MPH require larger signs with 8" letter heights when post mounting.
Novelty Street Signs Banned for Use on Roads
Over the years, we get helpful information about traffic control issues from the cities we deal with. One increasing problem is the use of novelty street name signs on public or private roads which is banned by the cities. Let's discuss this, the Federal Highway Administration has specific requirements on street signs for use on public or private roadways, and with good reason. Requirements like official sizes, correct letter heights, fonts, spacing, and reflectivity. Novelty signs don't adhere to these standards. The reported problem is emergency vehicles (Fire, Medical, Police) are having a difficult time trying to locate the street when novelty signs are used. Emergency personnel are wasting valuable time which would have been avoided by using proper signs. Novelty signs will fade quickly, use smaller or compressed letters, have smaller blades (less then 6" tall), little or no reflectivity, and difficult to read even in daylight. These signs are OK to put on your wall but should never be used on streets or roads. High intensity reflective signs are recommended for city use.
