This section deals with the standard sign posts available for purchase. The common choice is green or galvanized (gray) U-channel posts which are easy to install since the ends are tapered. Remember, sign posts are installed at depths of 2-3 feet into ground. When installing in cement, the depths are around 1-2 feet. Therefore, a 8 foot post installed 2 feet in the ground will result in the pole being 6 feet high. Break Away U-channel Posts These posts are recommended for easy installations, no special tools required, safety issues, and commonly used by cities nationwide. This system uses a 3 foot base post, 8 ft or 10 ft top post, and special break away hardware. The 3 ft base post is placed in the ground or cement so 3-4 inches of the post remains above ground level. The top post (8 ft or 10 ft) section is connected to the base post using 2 sets of bolts, nuts, spacers, and washers. Basically, the holes from both poles are lined up with each other then bolted together. If the pole is struck by a vehicle, the top pole breaks away upon impact which offers greater safety. It's easier to install because you're only driving the 3 ft section into the ground, you're not on a ladder trying to drive a 10 ft pole into the ground. A sledge hammer is used to drive these posts into the ground. Also, 8 ft break way posts can be shipped UPS and allows signs to be installed at higher heights since the post will be 8 ft high from ground level.
